
Program Read depends on volunteers to serve as tutors, class room helpers, and on the Board of Directors. In return, volunteers get training and experience, meet other interesting people, and perform a valuable service to their community.

Volunteer Tutors
Program Read depends on volunteer tutors to deliver its services. Our volunteer tutors are men and women of all ages, from many different backgrounds. What they have in common is an interest in helping others improve their reading, writing, math or computer skills.Program Read asks volunteers to commit to working with a student at least once a week.
Tutor Responsibilities
A Program Read tutor is one who:
- plans and documents learners lessons and progress (one-on-one tutors only)
- maintains communication with staff regarding learner progress
- is responsive to the needs of the individual student
- facilitates the student's learning
- respects the student and appreciates that the student brings skills and prior knowledge to the learning experience
- is non-judgmental, caring and interested in the student
- is creative in adapting teaching methods to suit the individual student’s needs
- is enthusiastic and willing to keep learning
- can give constructive feedback
- welcomes the student’s suggestions
- is well organized for each lesson
- attend basic tutor training when offered

Board of Directors
The Board of Directors is responsible for the governance of Program Read. The Board is made up of volunteers from the community. The nine Directors represent different areas of the community and bring a variety of work and life experiences to their Board work.Board members are elected at the Annual General Meeting in late May or early June. The term of office is three years. The Board meets at least four times per year.
Board Member Responsiblities
A Program Read Board Member:
- is informed about and committed to the organization
- has the time to attend meetings and do the follow-up work
- works well in a group
- has good communication skills.
- committed to supporting the goals of Program Read
